There are many aspects of The Memorial that make it a special tournament and Jack Nicklaus is responsible for most of them. His vision of a “Masters like” event in his hometown has grown to a distinguished status on the PGA Tour. The Memorial selects an honoree each year based on their contribution to the game of golf. Jack was smart enough to realize that he could use some help and perspective from some valued associates to make The Memorial the best it could be. He developed an advisory board called “The Captains Club.” The Club chooses the honoree and advises Nicklaus on the tournament. The Captains Club is “a group of statesmen who act independently of the tournament organization, but who also advise on player invitations and the conduct of the event generally.” These are the members of The Captains Club. There are golfers and business people, a pair of former presidents and the coolest guy on earth; Sean Connery. Jack has always done everything with class and the Captains Club is no different. Connery’s job must be to provide the “cool,” after all he is 007.
