Tiger, the Funkmaster and TheChristinaKim

This Sunday looks to be one of the most interesting and entertaining of this year’s golf season. The players leading or near the top of the leader board are some of the biggest personalities on their tours. Let’s start with the PGA Tour. Yes, the biggest name in golf, actually the biggest name in sport has reclaimed his rightful place as the leader of the Buick Open. Tiger Woods played a creative round of 65 to get to -17 and when leader Michael Letzig double bogeyed the eighteenth Woods found himself in the lead. They might as well hand him the trophy on the first tee today as Woods is an unstoppable 35-1 when he leads after 54 holes. Tiger is still spraying the ball a bit and his round included shots from adjacent fairways and under and around trees. For a few moments on Saturday he could have been an average Joe out there hacking it around. But, then Woods always found a way to get it on the green and make a bird or salvage a par. That’s what makes him Tiger Woods.
At the major championships being contested this weekend, two golfers that enjoy playing golf more than any others on tour give the Americans their best chance at victory. Fred Funk leads at the US Senior Open Championship and Christina Kim sits in second place at the Women’s British Open Championship. Funk is the ex-college golf coach that has worked hard and hung with the game to blossom in his forties and now his fifties on the Senior Tour. He has a one stroke lead over legend Greg Norman and journeyman Joey Sindelar. No other senior golfer has as much fun as Fred Funk. He truly appreciates where he is and how wonderful a life he has made for himself. This would be a fantastic win for Funk as he was seriously ill with an infection he developed after knee surgery earlier this year. A major for Funk this year could be the comeback story of the year.
If Funk is the senior that has the most fun, then Christina Kim must be the golfer that has the most fun in golf, period. No other golfer, on any tour, enjoys what they are doing more than Christina. She plays with a passion, in both golf and life. Her activity on “Twitter”, as The ChristinaKim, has made her a cult favorite. It doesn’t matter if she is playing in the final group of a major or a practice round with friends she’ll play to have fun. She is a friend to everyone on tour and is one of the most entertaining characters in golf. Kim looks to be the only hope left for the Americans as she tries to chase down leader Catriona Matthew. Today has the potential to be a great and exciting day on all the tours.
