Weather Is No Break For Stacy Lewis

by Jeff Skinner

Anyone that plays golf knows that some days you get the breaks and some days you don’t.  In the long run we like to think that the breaks even out over time but I can’t help but think that Stacy Lewis may have gotten a bad break yesterday at the US Women’s Open.

Lewis went out early and was able to put up a good number; yes a one under 70 is a good number at Oakmont.  With the course figuring to play a little tougher as the day went on Lewis looked to be sitting pretty.  She was in the clubhouse at three over par and the field was moving back to her.  Of all the players that finished their rounds Lewis had the best score of the day.  Only Cristie Kerr and Heather Young came close with their matching 71’s.  First round leader, Brittany Lang carded a three over 74 and of all the players that had started their rounds only three had managed to get it under par.  Lewis looked to have caught a break.

After her round, but before the suspension of play she assessed her chances. “This golf course is showing its teeth I think today, and I think it’s going to. The wind is starting to blow. Some of the par-3s are playing a little tougher today, I think, so I think that’s gonna move me up a lot by the end of the day.”

Then the weather did her in.  The rain and lightning forced the players off the course and the forecast was for more of the same.  The USGA suspended play and will resume the second round on Saturday morning.  Unfortunately for Lewis the course should play a little bit easier with softer, slower greens.  With the beast that is Oakmont playing a bit less nasty, Lewis may not get everything out of that 70 that she should of.

She certainly got a bit of a break on the fourth hole when she holed her six iron from 160 yards for an eagle.  Some days you get a break even when you don’t get all the breaks.  With a little luck Lewis will be near the top of the leaderboard come Sunday afternoon.
