I spent Sunday following Phil Mickelson around the Deutsche Bank Championship at The TPC Boston and as usual he had the crowd eating out of his hands again. From the time he stepped on the first tee to the time he sunk his last putt for birdie on eighteen the fans were screaming their support wherever he travelled. I can say that he returned their adulation with a great number of head nods, hat tips, waves, thumbs up and broad smiles. Phil may not lead the tour in scoring average but he certainly leads it in giving away golf balls. Everytime you turn around Phil is handing a ball to another adoring kid. I feel sorry for Phil’s caddy, Bones MacKay as he has to tote that bag around with all those extra balls that Phil gives away to his young fans. It’s just one of the things that make him America’s most beloved golfer.
