Rocco’s Big Day

by Jeff Skinner

Rocco Mediate is having a special week.  The 47 year old continues to amaze at the Frys.com Open and holds a three stroke lead going into the final day.  He made his third eagle of the tournament on his way to a four under 67.  How can you not root for Rocco?  He has been out here forever.  His idol is fellow Pennsylvanian, Arnold Palmer.  He talks more than Lee Trevino and he took Tiger to the mat at the 2008 US Open.  That was vintage Rocco: smiling and chatting his way around Pebble Beach with the best player in the world trying to cut him down.  Pressure?  Rocco showed no signs cracking under the pressure.  He had a ball and so did we.

This is a big chance for Rocco.  He has had a tough year with only $238,067 in 23 starts.  A win here will keep Rocco on The PGA tour for the next two years and be a nice bridge to golf’s greatest mulligan; The Champions Tour.  He’s hoping for his first win in eight years.  Looking for a feel good story?  It’s Rocco and he’ll be talking his way around the course and just maybe stealing one from the youngsters this week.
