All right, The Players is here and even though it is definitely not a major, we include it in our Majors Pool. Being included in the Majors Pool is in no way indicative of the stature of The Players. It’s just a way to make our pool a bit more interesting. I bet Tim Finchem is thrilled to have his Players Championship mentioned in the same company as the four majors but he shouldn’t get too excited. It is just a bunch of golf junkies using it as a means to try and win a few bucks from their buddies. So here is what everyone is waiting for, my picks for The Players. If you’re smart you’ll put your cash on anyone other than my picks.
Bubba Watson has turned into the ultimate sandbagger. He’s been bitching about TPC Sawgrass and how it doesn’t fit his game. The last time he whined about a course he won at the Zurich Classic.
Bill Haas is playing well lately and looks to be on the verge of another win.
Is anyone playing better than Luke Donald? I think not. Length isn’t needed here as much as accuracy. This fits Donald well.
Tiger Woods? Well it’s going to happen sometime. He could pull one out of his……bag.
Phil Mickelson will need to hit his driver a bit straighter or he’ll be home for Saturday breakfast with the kids.
Matt Kuchar is about as consistent as you can get on The PGA Tour right now and that will serve him well at Sawgrass.
Adam Scott has won here before but with a broomstick? That would be something.
Can Charl Schwartzel back up his Masters title with another big win?
Last year’s major winners have been quiet in 2011. Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen and Martin Kaymer have been flying under the radar if that’s possible for major champions. Don’t be shocked if one of them pulls this one out.
How about a one in a million pick with Tommy Two Gloves Gainey? Just making the field here is an achievement for Two Gloves and a win would be utterly amazing.
Dark Horse Picks: One for the old guys, Davis Love III and one for the new guys, really new, Matteo Manaserro.
I have to pick three for the pool so here goes: Luke Donald, if there is a favorite it is Luke. Matt Kuchar, he is bound to be close to the top on Sunday. Tiger Woods: this way I can use my pick on Tiger here so I don’t have to use it on a real major.
