It looks to be a very interesting week in golf as two of the major tours change from their typical medal play formats and mix it up with a bit of match play.
The European Tour is hosting an elite 24 man field at The Volvo World Match Play Championship in Andalucia, Spain. All four current major champions and World Number One, Lee Westwood and newly minted World Number Two, Luke Donald headline an interesting field in an unique format. The tournament’s new format that sees the 24 participants split into eight groups of three players, with everyone playing two matches and the top two players from each group progressing to the knock-out stages on Saturday and Sunday. The ladies of The LPGA get back in action for the first time in three weeks at The Sybase Match Play Championship at Hamilton Farm Golf Club. Nine of the top ten players in the world are competing and the format here also has a bit of a twist. The top 32 players in the field are seeded that way, 1-32, but the other 32 players are put into a blind draw where the top 32 players blindly select their opponents. It gives The Sybase its own distinctive flair. Popular American players Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Cristie Kerr, Stacy Lewis and Morgan Pressel are all in the star studded field. See the draw here.
The PGA Tour keeps it simple this week with its normal stroke play format and moves to Colonial Country Club and the Crown Plaza Invitational. Davis Toms will get right back on the horse as he tries to shake off that tough loss at The Players. Colonial is Ben Hogan Country and the tributes to The Hawk and Hogan’s Alley will be hot and heavy this week. This is the 65th consecutive year that Colonial has hosted a PGA Tour event. That tells you two things: Colonial is a very good course and the Fort Worth community certainly supports this event. See the entire field here.
