PGA’s Par Three 15th Causing Controversy

by Jeff Skinner

The Atlanta Athletic Club has undergone a serious renovation since 2001 when the PGA Championship was last held here.  New grasses in the fairways and the rough, new tees and some green tweaking have made this course nothing like it was ten years ago.  While the players are unanimous in their praise for the condition of the course many are criticizing some of the setup.

One such hole is the newly lengthened par three 15th.  Playing at 265 yards it’s more of a very short par four or a par three that’s been fed steroids.  It plays to a well protected green with water all along the right and bunkers long and left.

Many players have questioned the decision to lengthen the scene of David Tom’s ace in 2001.  Charl Schwartzel, Bubba Watson, Luke Donald and Darren Clarke all said that length is something that is being abused by course designers.

As for Toms he says he definitely won’t be hitting his five wood into that hole as he did in 2001.
