Phil’s Great Putter Experiment

by Jeff Skinner

The Phil Mickelson Long Putter Watch has officially begun.  Phil is conducting The Great Belly Putter Experiment at The Deutsche Bank Championship as he wields a belly banger around the TPC Boston.  Phil used 29 putts on his way to a one under 70 that left him five strokes back of leader Troy Matteson.

Phil used the same amount of putts during the first round of The Barclays.  The big difference was his driver.  He hit 71 per cent of his fairways, well above his season’s average of 53 per cent.

Phil was happy with the results but admits it is still a learning experience.  He is using his pal Keegan Bradley for some tips on the belly putter and recognizes that there’s a bit of a learning curve for such a drastic change.
