No Rory/Tiger/Phil Group at WGC, Not Yet

by Jeff Skinner

If you ask me the folks at The WGC Cadillac Championship missed a great opportunity.  With all the buzz coming off of Rory and Tiger at The Honda Classic on Sunday they had a chance to keep the excitement going with a Rory/Tiger pairing.  Heck, throw Phil Mickelson into that threesome and it would have been 30 deep behind the ropes following that group.  And it would have been great theater, maybe too much for some.

But  they followed the trend at the WGC events and grouped the players according to the Official World Golf Rankings and I can understand that thinking.  It’s a good way to showcase the best players in the world but a Rory/Phil/Tiger grouping would have blown the roof off  The Blue Monster.  Maybe we’ll get them together on the weekend.  We can only hope.  As it is there are still some great groupings. (See tee times here.)

World one, two and three: McIlroy, Donald and Westwood are attractive any time.  Kaymer, Stricker and Simpson aren’t bad either.  Phil, Scott and Mahan will draw a big crowd and Tiger, Watney and Garcia puts Tiger in with Sergio who is in the midst of his own comeback.  Good stuff, good stuff.
