Fred Couples: Living The Dream at The Masters

by Jeff Skinner

Today the patrons of Augusta National were treated to one of those days.  You know, those days that we dream about but they rarely come true.  Today at The Masters many fans had their dreams realized as one of their favorites came through with stellar, almost dream-like round.

Fred Couples shoots the low round of the day with a five under 67 to jump into a tie for the lead with Jason Dufner at five under par.  This is the fifty two year old Fred Couples, the Freddy with a back so tender he needs special treatments not even approved in the U.S.  This is Fred Couples who plays with the old guys on the Champions Tour.  He doesn’t beat the young guys; he captains them to President Cup victories.

But this is also the Fred Couples that loves playing at Augusta like no other course in the world.  Couples won here in 1992 and has relished strolling the hills of Augusta ever since.  Maybe it’s because everything moves a beat slower at Augusta.  Couples has made a living off his laid back, seemingly easy going personality.  And Fred is indeed a cool, calm and collected guy.  But don’t be fooled into thinking that he isn’t as competitive as anyone out there.  He wants this one, and wants it bad.

With his knowledge of Augusta and the way he has hit the ball in rounds one and two he just needs his back to hold up and he could be there on Sunday when the real tournament begins.
