A Tough Day 1 at the U.S. Open

by Jeff Skinner

Shot of the day was by Nick Watney…Double Eagle on 17….only the third in U.S. Open history.  Click here for a look.

Michael Allen did his best to have the top shot with his eagle at 14.  Maybe his 2,000 rounds of play on Olympic helped a bit.  Click here for a look.

Can anybody hit a fairway out there?

Michael Thompson’s 4 under was by far the round of the day…7 birds, 3 bogeys…that will do it at an Open.

Where are all the studs on the leaderboard?  Only six players under par and besides Tiger with his fourteen majors, of the top fourteen finishers there are only three major winners, Toms, G-Mac and Furyk, all with a lone major.

I don’t care what fourteen year old Andy Zhang shot.  He started out eight over par through five holes but after he settled down he played good golf.  79 isn’t bad for a kid who is really too young to know he is living his dream.

Lee Westwood struggled to a 73 but kept his sense of humor all afternoon

So much for the “Marquee Groups.”  Tiger was the only one to break par and Phil, Bubba, Luke, Rory and Lee were a combined 33 over par…OUCH!

I thought it was tough watching Phil and Bubba…but Luke and Rory played absolutely horrible.
