The DVR: A Snowbound Golfer’s Best Friend

by Jeff Skinner

What does a golfer do when a nor’easter is pounding on the windows, dropping snow and making any chance at playing golf impossible?  Well, in my case yesterday I went to my DVR and looked for anything I had that was golf related.  Of course I had plenty of recorded golf but I came across the PBS Special “Golf’s Grand Design.”

Now I remember recording it back in August but I hadn’t yet sat down to watch it.  Yesterday, as the wind blew and the snow quelled any hope of striking a ball I sat down for an hour and watched it.  It was well worth it.

It covered every prominent American golf course architect from the father of American golf course architecture, CB Macdonald to Tom Bendelow (600 courses) to Tillinghast to Jones Sr. to Nicklaus to Dye to Doak to Hanse and everyone in between.

Many of the most hallowed courses were featured including National Golf Links, Van Cortland Park (first public course in America) Winged Foot, Pinehurst, Sawgrass, Sand Hills and Bandon Dunes.

It was a great mixture of golf history and course architecture and certainly worth the time, especially when the temperature was 28 degrees with howling winds and blowing snow.

Unfortunately, PBS doesn’t have it on the viewing schedule any time soon but you can click here for a link to many short videos taken from the show including interviews with Nicklaus, Coore, McLay Kidd, Doak, and Dye.
