PGA Tour Goes Old School at Riviera & The Northern Trust Open

by Jeff Skinner

The boys of the PGA Tour get ready to take on a gem of a course at Riviera Country Club today at The Northern Trust Open.  Riviera is an old school, George “The Captain” Thomas design (1927) that has stood the test of time.  Players rave about this shot makers test and the strategy needed to be successful at Riviera.

Originally, called the Los Angeles Open this course has hosted U.S. Opens and PGA Championships and boasts a hall of fame list of past champions.  Hogan, Snead, Nelson, Palmer, Watson, Els, Couples and Mickelson all have their name on this trophy.

Last year we saw one of the most exciting finishes of the season as Mickelson who was trying to follow his win at Pebble Beach with another win here and playing partner Keegan Bradley sink birdie putts on eighteen to tie Bill Haas who was in the clubhouse at seven under.  The three went to a playoff and Haas sank an unlikely putt to claim the title in a very exciting finish.
