No Contraptions for Arnie, Palmer Wants One Set of Rules

by Jeff Skinner

There isn’t a real golfer out there that doesn’t respect Arnold Palmer.  The King is, and always will be The Man in golf. If you needed any more reason to love The King he gave it to us at Bay Hill yesterday.  He supports the proposed ban by the USGA and the R&A and wants the anchored stroke banned. Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Putter 3013

“That’s not part of the game of golf. To attach it to your body in any way is taking a little bit away from the game,” Palmer said. “I’m not going to argue with anybody about it. I’ve stated my position, and that is we do not need a contraption to play the game of golf.

“I would hope that we’d play under one set of rules, and those rules would include a ban on the long putter hooked to the body in some way, shape or form.”

Good for you Arnie.

PGA Tour Commissioner may be miffed at The King but he’s The King and Finchem is just a shill for a bunch of rich golfers that care more about their tour membership then they do the game of golf.

Arnie went on a bit further and really hit the heart of the matter here, “I don’t think that golf has a place for two sets of rules,” Palmer said. “I think one of the reasons that the game has progressed in the way that it has over the years is the fact that the amateurs and the pros all play the same game and they play under the same set of rules. I feel like that is very, very important. It may be the key to the future success of the game of golf, just the fact that there will be one set of rules and we’ll all play by them.”

And that’s the critical issues here, one set of rules for all golfers.  That is what sets golf apart from so many other sports.  The amateurs can play the same clubs, the same balls and the same courses that the professionals play and they do it under the same set of rules.

If Finchem wants to play under a different set of rules than what is set forth by the USGA and the R&A then they won’t be playing golf, they will be playing something other than golf.  I don’t know what to call it but it won’t be golf.

If it’s good enough for Arnie it’s good enough for me.
