So much for the predictions of horrible weather at the U.S. Open. Believe it or not the golf Gods showed favor upon us and we got to see plenty of golf today. Even though our drive from New York to Merion was a very wet one, with fairly heavy rain we totally lucked out.
Play had been halted during our drive and we faced the prospect of being totally washed out but fate had other plans for us.
In 2009 at Bethpage as I entered the grounds play was stopped. But today in a cosmic payback, as we stepped foot on those hallowed grounds of Merion they resumed play. The rain subsided, the sun came out and we got to see a solid six and a half hours of golf. In fact it got quite warm and I was hoping for a brief shower to cool us off.
Merion is all we expected. An old school mixture of twists and turns and bunkers and rough and greens, oh the greens.
After seeing most of the course it is easy to see why Merion is held in such high regard. It’s simply a wonderful, intimately complicated blend of great holes testing player’s skill, patience and strategy.
We spent sometime at the long, 256 yard par three third hole and witnessed some excellent golf including birdies from Luke Donald, Adam Scott, Angel Cabrera and Webb Simpson.
We were able to spend time watching Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and most of the rest and we felt we were playing with house money.
After all, this was supposed to be a washout and we got plenty of great golf. It’s a Merion Miracle. And it’s just going to get better.
