The U.S. Women’s Open was the fourth golf tournament I attended this past month. With Inbee Park’s historic win at Sebonack Golf Club my “June of Golf” adventure has come to an end.
This past week I traveled down to Southampton on Tuesday for the player’s press conferences and practice rounds and on Saturday I watched most of the third round on a great day for golf.
I clocked 624 miles for two round trips, snuck in 18 holes at my local state course and spent way too much time in traffic on Long Island. No matter where you are on Long Island there’s traffic, plenty of traffic. 
But it was worth the time as I got to participate in the press conferences of Stacy Lewis, Inbee Park, Yani Tseng and Paula Creamer. And I even had a chat with Tom Doak the co-designer of the course. The USGA are great hosts and all their people at the media center were so accommodating.
After walking Sebonack it is easy to see why the USGA were so quick to bring the Women’s Open here. It’s fantastic. Everything from the layout and design to the conditioning to the knockout views of the bay…everything setup perfect for this major championship.
If there was anything that went wrong during the week it was hard to tell. The USGA has to be thrilled with the way Sebonack handled the championship and Inbee Park is a great champion.
The highlights for me were getting to know Sebonack and watching some great golf but being able to ask the players some questions and chatting with Tom Doak was the icing on the cake.
This expedition started back in the first week of June with a trip to the Wegman’s LPGA Championship then I headed down to Merion and the U.S. Open. From there I hit the Travelers Championship for two days and finished with the U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack.
They all were great but there is nothing like being at a major so Merion and Sebonack were extra special.
During the month I asked questions of Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan, Stacy Lewis, Yani Tseng, Paula Creamer and Inbee Park. And Tom Doak was unlucky enough to cross paths with a star struck admirer.
All in all it was a fun month for me. I tallied 2,117 miles, 81 holes of golf, three states, a bunch of souvenirs, way too many cheeseburgers, not enough vodka, one cheese steak, two really sore feet and a little sunburn.
It was all worth it, I’m a fanatic. What can I say? And I am not done yet. After I take July off to work on my neglected golf game I plan to make it to five different tournaments in August.
Like I said, I’m a fanatic.
