A Final Round Quickie for Mickelson at the PGA Championship

by Jeff Skinner

It was a lost week for Phil Mickelson at the 95th PGA Championship.  Unable to ride the momentum of his Open Championship victory Mickelson struggled all week at Oak Hill Country Club, the pride of Rochester, New York.

Phil’s inability to hit fairways on the difficult driving Oak Hill kept him from ever mounting any charge at back to back major championships.  Hitting from the punishing rough all week took its toll on Phil as he recorded three sevens during his travels around Oak Hill and finished at twelve over par for the week.phil 1

His PGA was essentially over after posting one over 71in the first two rounds.  And his third round 78 was indicative of his lack of focus on a championship he knew was outside of his reach.

Today he couldn’t wait to get through his final round and he and Stephen Gallacher scooted around Oak Hill in a brisk three hours.  Obviously, enough was enough for Lefty.

Asked after his round what were his plans, he already had one foot on his jet,” I’m going to be in the air soon. I’m going to go just work on my short game at my home, just chip and putt, and then wait four or five days before I start hitting balls again because I want to just kind of forget these couple of weeks where I really haven’t struck it the way I had for a few months.”

The Barclays is next on Phil’s schedule as he looks to find that magic that brought him back to back wins at the Scottish Open and his fifth major, the Open Championship.
