Winners & Losers at the PGA Championship

by Jeff Skinner

Winner:  Of course Jason Dufner was the biggest winner at Oak Hill.  Grabbing your first major, breaking the course record and shooting 63 gives you that winning feeling for sure.  But if you watched any of the post round interviews with Duf you saw and heard an intelligent, thoughtful and humble winner.Dufner Trophy pga

Loser (in name only): They say second place is the first loser but I think in Jim Furyk’s case he proved he still had game.  And his new “Dr. Bob Rotella” attitude will serve him well the rest of his career.

Winner:  Oak Hill and the City of Rochester:  Despite all the rain the course showed what a great championship venue it is.  It tested the best golfers in the world and broke down many of the biggest names in the game.  The people of Rochester showed they are old hands in hosting the big ones and the PGA Championship has to keep Oak Hill in their rotation for years to come.

Loser:  Any fan that screams anything right after a golfer hits his shot.  That includes: In the Hole, Mashed Potatoes, Baba Booey, Sausage & Peppers, Garbage Plate, Five Hour Energy and anything else those idiots can come up with.

Winner:  Rory McIlroy may have found his game and his T8 finish was his only top ten in a major this season.  There is still plenty of golf left and hopefully the world number three will start playing like the old Rory.

Loser:   Tiger Woods was hitting on all cylinders coming into the PGA but he was leaking oil early and often at Oak Hill.  Five plus years without a major win and even with his five PGA Tour wins this season 2013 is a disappointment for the 14 time major champion.

Winner:  Sweden.  Henrik Stenson finished third at the PGA and his countrymen Jonas Blixt was right behind in fourth.  Stenson continued his hot streak and Blixt is one of the bright young, talented faces in golf.

Loser:  The USGA announced their new television deal with Fox Sports on the eve of the PGA Championship.  Whatever the reason it was a classless move from an entity that prides itself on doing everything right.

Winner:  Me.  I got to spend two days up at Oak Hill and visit with my son, his girl and that crazy dog.

  1. Did you hear Dufner on Howard Stern this morning, not a bad interview, too bad Howard doesn’t know even a little about golf…sounds like you had fun at the PGA…we should sneak in a round in Sept. when i’m in the area. I sent my own clubs there now so The Greek is in trouble!!!

  2. Duf and Stern, now that’s a strange pair. PGA was great and if you’re playing with you own sticks we all in trouble!
