Happy New Year! New PGA Tour Season Starts This Week

by Jeff Skinner

Time was when the PGA Tour season started in January with the start of the new year. That was the old PGA Tour where January was the first month of the year.  But the folks at the New PGA Tour decided for a number of reasons to eschew the traditional calendar and start their own October to September calendar.  So this Thursday the official 2013-2014 PGA Tour season starts at the Frys.com Open.  There are six full field tournaments before the first one in January, The Tournament of Champions.

And we may see things change as far as the old “Fall Series” events.  Doug Ferguson tells us that some players traded a release to play in Turkey last season for a commitment to play at the Frys over the next three years.  “A year ago, eight PGA Tour members took part in an exhibition in Turkey called the World Golf Finals, held the same week as the Frys.com Open. In exchange for a release from the Tour, they agreed to play the Frys.com Open at least once over the next three years.  Those players were Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Justin Rose, Hunter Mahan, Charl Schwartzel, Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar.”

Those are some pretty big names and if we get to see them play fall golf on tour we all will have gained from this “calendar extension.”
