For all those golfers that judge their manhood by hitting drivers with single digit lofts here’s some news. Even the professionals are realizing that higher lofts just might be better. Any double digit handicapper shouldn’t even think about going lower than a 10.5 degree driver and maybe we should be looking even higher.
According to the PGA Tour’s Equipment Report plenty of TaylorMade staffers have put higher lofted drivers in their bags. “TaylorMade players lofting up: The trend of players using TaylorMade drivers with additional loft continued at the Sony Open. A total of 37 players had the company’s SLDR driver in play, with 23 of them using a head that was set at 10 degrees of loft or higher. Three players — Stewart Cink, William McGirt and Scott Verplank — used drivers with 12 degrees of loft, while Sean O’Hair went from 9 degrees to 10.5 degrees. John Daly also went from 7 degrees to a 9-degree SLDR.”
If John Daly has seen the light and lofted up what excuse do we have. Years ago you couldn’t find a driver with 12 degrees of loft anywhere near a professional. But the latest technology on these big dogs requires us to leave yesterday’s strategy behind and re-evaluate our club selection. If the pros are gearing up we all should consider it too.
