Phil Mickelson & His 216 Yard 7 Iron

by Jeff Skinner

Phil Mickelson was hitting on all cylinders yesterday in the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship. Philly Mick opened with a course record 29 over the front nine on his way to a 63 which left him in third place and two shots behind the leader J.B. Holmes.

But the thrills from Phil the Thrill didn’t end there. On the par three 13th hole which played at 216 yards Phil even shocked his caddie. Bone Mackay knew it was a six iron for his long hitting boss…but Phil had other ideas.

He liked a seven iron to work the ball back to the pin. A seven iron for 216 yards? Even Bones balked at that and uttered “Oh my God” in a moment of doubt. But Bones has seen Phil make the unlikely shot time and time again. Saturday was no different as Phil blasted a bit of hook to the pin and stepped up and sunk the birdie.

“It was a pin back-right and there was a little swale in line with the pin, and if I were to hit a shot right at it with, say, a 6-iron, it was going to hit that swale and kick off the green, or I would have to play 20 feet away from the pin, which, you know me, that’s not my thing,” Mickelson said. “So I round-hooked a 7-iron around the swale.”

It was classic Phil, both the shot and the attitude. Sunday is shaping up as one really good show on the PGA Tour.
