David Duval…Very Interesting

by Jeff Skinner

Miguel Angel Jimenez has won the title as the Most Interesting Golfer in the World, and rightly so but if Miguel at the top …who is second?  I would have to cast my ballot for Double D…David Duval.

Duval is making some noise this week at the HP Byron Nelson Championship as he is currently tied for second place one stroke off the lead.

Duval was the one of the few golfers that really took it to Tiger Woods when Woods was at his absolute best. In 2001 Duval capped off an amazing run of 13 victories in five seasons with his 2001 Open Championship win.duval nelson

With that win he unseated his friend and Nike stablemate Woods as World Number One, flew home with Woods on his private plane  and then disappeared.

“A lot of things happened,” he said. “When I won, it was thrilling, absolutely fantastic. But not long afterwards I realized I didn’t feel any different about who I was or about my life than I had before I won. It was an existential type of thing, you know, is that all there is? I thought my life should be different – feel different – and it really didn’t. Something went out of me there.”

He was no longer Double D…he had turned into the Invisible Man.

Duval was always one of the most introspective thinkers on tour and after he reached the top of the golfing mountain he asked himself, is this all there is?

John Feinstein profiled Duval earlier this month on Golf Channel.com and gives us Duval’s perspective on why he continues to try and win on the PGA Tour.

He is definitely the Most Interesting 890th Ranked Golfer in the World.
