Five months after proposing Rory McIlroy announced today that he and his girlfriend, Caroline Wozniacki have ended their relationship.
The 25 year old McIlroy then went into his press conference for the BMW PGA Championship and spoke about the break up which came just days after the two had mailed out their wedding invitations.
McIlroy looked worn and emotionally spent as he talked about how difficult and painful this has been.
“I’m not going to lie, it’s going to be very difficult,” said the Northern Irishman. “But you know, at least when I get inside the ropes, I will just try and concentrate on the shot at hand. But yes, it’s obviously going to be difficult.
“Look, I think I’m no different than anyone else. Everyone has been through break-ups and it’s obviously very, very difficult.”
“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people,” McIlroy explained. “The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.
“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had.”
“It was mutual and amicable and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us. It’s time to move on and I think I’ve said all that I need to say.
“I just want to get my head into golf this week and concentrate on the tournament and try and do well. I have been playing well. The form has been good. I want to dive straight into it and keep myself somewhat busy and just try to have a good week on the course.”
McIlroy and Wozniacki have carried on a very high profile relationship. For a time they were both ranked number one in their sports and never shied away from showing their relationship in public.
Now, a clearly shaken McIlroy is hoping the press will leave him alone on the subject and let him heal on his own.
That may be asking a lot, especially for the vicious, tabloid press in Britain.
McIlroy has had some ups and downs in his career but he has always been open and willing to speak honestly on most subjects. And that is one of the aspects that makes Rory so likable.
He’s open and sensitive and has always given the press most anything they asked. This will be a tough one for Rory. Let’s hope the tabloids can give the young man a break and let him heal in his own time.
