Bubba Watson Finds U.S. Open Greens “Unfriendly”

by Jeff Skinner

us open logo 14Bubba Watson may have just cast the first volley at the new and revamped Pinehurst No.2. Watson called these U.S. Open greens “unfriendly” and said he may need to “lay farther back” than normal in order to avoid trouble.

Watson gave an example of hitting an eight iron to his selected spot on the green and watched the ball bounce off the back.

When prodded he wouldn’t go as far and use the word unfair but did call them “U.S. Open greens.”

Bubba said it’s going to be a week of second shots and playing the green complexes conservatively. Getting it close and getting up and down for par while others can’t will be the key this week he said.

On the way the U.S. Open stresses a player mentally he said the expected,” it wears you down mentally…it’s different from every other week we play.”

With two major championships under his belt he is set for life financially and that may be a good thing because he said, “We’d all have to find new jobs if we had to do this every week.”

He is also confused about what to call the “native areas” that has replaced all the rough here at Pinehurst. Take it from the designer Bill Coore. He simply call it the “stuff.”
