Chatting with Ben Crenshaw

by Jeff Skinner

us open logo 14I just spent a few minutes with one of the heroes of the game. Ben Crenshaw was smoozing around the practice green talking with players, caddies and just about anyone who wanted a word with the two time Masters Champion.

He was generous enough to take a second and accept my congratulations for the great reception his Pinehurst restoration is receiving.

He was gracious and kind and he actually took a second to reflect on what he called such a tough question when I asked which career was more rewarding playing courses or designing them.

He said that he was so enjoying his second career that it was hard to choose but that “I knew at sixteen years old that I wanted to design golf courses.”

He said he was able to play The Country Club at Brookline in the Junior Amateur and with that walk across the hallowed ground where Francis Ouimet’s victory made golf an American game he knew what he wanted to do with his life.

Of course he got sidetracked by a Hall of Fame playing career but his post playing career appears to have worked out..

Crenshaw has a reputation as being a true gentleman of the game. For a few minutes today he impressed me as just that. He’s all class all the way.
