Pinehurst Journal Day 3 & 4

by Jeff Skinner

us open logo 14It has been real busy down here in Pinehurst and I have been bouncing between the media center and the course to watch and actually play some golf.

Wednesday at Pinehurst was a brief Adam Scott press conference, some work with the logistics crew of the USGA and the eighteen holes of golf for myself.

My brother and son flew in and after a Seinfeld moment at the rental car company where they had no car for them we finally got on the course.

By the way, I agree with Jerry Seinfeld, if you have a reservation you should have a car. That’s how a reservation works. Isn’t it?

But we did manage to play Whispering Pines which was a lovely layout and a solid value. But we did have to deal with a thunderstorm of biblical proportions for twenty minutes. But we manned our arks and fortunately rode out the storm.  Surprisingly, Pinehurst No.2 got no rain.

Of course my brother won the day again with that damn “no big mistakes” game of his.

We took in a little bit of the local Pinehurst night life at a place called The Ironwood Café which sits a mere lob wedge from Pinehurst itself.

The food was great, the place was hopping and a joyous time was had by all. After all it’s one big party here at the U.S. Open.

Thursday was all about watching the pros take on this Coore & Crenshaw redo.

We saw a ton of action and can really appreciate all the thought that went into the restoration. Visually it’s a dream to look at. As far as playing, I think these greens and green surrounds will be the toughest challenge. Most of the golfers were having littlie problem with the sandy areas.

Today it’s more on course action and some more sunscreen.
