us open logo 14Sunday at the U.S. Open means Father’s Day and the many stories that all these golfers have about their dads. Sometime these guys can seem bigger than life but it is not uncommon to see these guys get emotional when they start talking about their dads or about being a dad.

One dad that is out there today playing in the biggest round of his life is Erik Compton. Compton is a miracle in soft spikes and his amazing story has been well chronicled in the golf media.

But today in the most important tournament in America Erik Compton will be introduced to those casual sports fans that don’t normally follow golf. And maybe that will help a few more heart patients across this country.compton 14 open

When Compton first came on tour, Web.com and PGA, he fought against being labeled as anything but a professional golfer. He wanted to be treated like any golfer good enough to make the tour not some medical marvel.

And for the most part he is but only by his fellow players. We here in the media can’t mention him without discussing his two heart transplants.

Soon after Compton started having success on tour he realized that his story can help outers with heart ailments. Whether it is spending time with kids or promoting the organ donor program, Compton has now taken on that responsibility.

This week he is concentrating on being a golfer and maybe a U.S. Open Champion. Next week he’ll be devoting his time to hospitals and charities. He knows how fortunate he has been and wants to help others if he can.

“When I’m out there, at times it’s hard to — when you look around and I realize where I have been and then…,” he told Ron Green of The Open Daily. “…But it shouldn’t matter. I’m just happy to be able to play golf.”
