I Wonder…Out Loud

by Jeff Skinner

I wonder when we are all going to stop talking about Tiger Woods chasing Jack Nicklaus. Tiger was so much closer to Jack’s record of 18 majors six years ago. That was when he won at Pebble Beach on a broken leg. Since then it has been a big zero in the major win column. Has he won? Certainly, he has 14 PGA Tournament wins since ’08 and even won Player of the Year last year…but majors? Nada. The question we need the answer to is “When will Tiger be able to stay healthy?” With the emphasis on stay. He’s been on the bench more than the backup to Cal Ripken…whoever that was.  cal

I wonder why more golf fans don’t watch the LPGA Tour. 2014’s LPGA season has been significantly more exciting than the PGA Tour’s. Just take the majors. We watched Bubba Watson and Jordan Spieth duel it out for only nine holes on Sunday at The Masters before Bubba claimed his second green jacket. Martin Kaymer won the U.S. Open by the end of round two. At the LPGA’s Kraft Nabisco two of their biggest names, Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie teed off in the final pairing with Lexi out lasting Michelle. At the U.S. Open Michelle and the ladies stole the show from the men at Pinehurst. This is the year for the LPGA.

I wonder if Anthony Kim is ever going to come back to play PGA Tour golf again. He had so much talent and such early success. Last we heard he was healthy and starting to hit golf balls but had yet to commit to full time practice to get his game back into tour shape. So much talent, so much promise, so much money….ah, I answered my own question.

I wonder why tournament directors still issue sponsor’s exemptions to John Daly. Does anyone actually buy a ticket to a PGA tournament to see Daly? Isn’t the thrill of Big John long gone? Daly last won in 2004 and before that his last win was the ’95 Open Championship. In the past nine seasons Big John has played in 142 PGA events. His line: 0 wins, 2 Top Tens, 55 missed cuts and 19 withdrawals. In his day Big John was a big draw and money in the bank. But those days are long past and those exemptions could certainly be put to better use. I can’t fathom a single fan laying down some cash to see Daly. Try You Tube and you can see John at his best…and most definitely at his worst. Daly is 48 and could be priming himself for a Champions Tour career. I can see it now, Daly paired with Colin Montgomerie in the ultimate odd couple duo.

I wonder why golfers choose to mark their ball with dots, lines, circles, colors and such. Why don’t they just write your name on it? After I saw Duffy Waldorf using balls that were all marked up by his kids it dawned on me. Why use a symbol when your name will do so much more. When my buddies walk up to my ball there’s never a doubt…SKINS… right there in black sharpie. No dot, circle or astrological sign scribbled there. Try it…it’s liberating. And don’t worry about someone finding your ball in the woods. They don’t know you anyway.
