10 Things I Think….

by Jeff Skinner

1.  Colin Mongomerie’s U. S. Senior Open win gives him two majors already this season. After an entire career of being shut out from the big ones I bet he wished he turned 50 sooner.

2.  Gene Sauers near miss at the Senior Open was heartbreaking. After coming back from a skin disease that almost took his life it would have been marvelous to see him win that thing. However, with his new outlook on life he’s just happy to be out there playing.

3.  Mo Martin’s win at the Women’s British Open wins the weekend for most excitement. She called it a Cinderella Story but I thought it was more like David and Goliath. Her 3-wood into 18 may just have well been hurled from her sling.

4.  Justin Rose once again proved that he has some big time golf game and that he is a true gentleman. Can he keep up the energy and make it three straight wins with his Open Championship as the topper? He’ll give it his best shot and no matter what remains one of the classiest guys in the game.

5.  Phil Mickelson is up to his old tricks again. He looks horrible, then great, then terrible then awesome. It’s the Phil the Thrill Roller Coaster and this week at the Open we are in for another crazy ride.

6.  Brian Harman’s win at the John Deere makes him the sixth Georgia Bulldog to win on the PGA Tour this year and seeing another first timer win was great. But how excited must he and his fiancé have been to be able to step on that charter flight and head to the Open Championship. That’s really good stuff from the folks at the John Deere.

7.  Can someone tell me how Tiger Woods is still one of the favorites at the Open Championship? Two competitive rounds since March and he’s the favorite? Wow, not in my book.

8.  I thought it was great to see the big boost in the field at the Scottish Open. Plenty more big names signed up to try and duplicate Phil’s 2013 double of the Scottish Open followed by an Open Championship.

9.  Hearing Rickie Fowler rave about his love of links golf is encouraging. 68-65 on the weekend and a T9 has Fowler primed for a run at his first major this week.

10.  There are many golf fans that are already missing Holly Sonders from The Golf Channel. Her departure has left many fans disappointed. On the bright side, we still have the svelte Charlie Rymer to look at.
