2006 Open Championship: Tiger’s Emotional Win

by Jeff Skinner

The Open Championship returns to Royal Liverpool this week and the last time we saw it during the 2006 Open there had been an unusually warm and dry summer.  This year it will play differently as this season has seen its usual amount of rain.

But in 2006 we saw a course baked so dry it was beyond brown, it was yellow.  We also witnessed Tiger Woods as he put on a display of patience, accuracy and game management rarely seen in major championship golf.

Woods won the Open Championship by leaving his driver in the bag (used only once) and hitting four irons and three woods off most of the tees. He also avoided the over 80 bunkers that guard the course that the locals call Hoylake.

While Woods’ mastery of the course was impressive his victory is mostly remembered for the way he collapsed into caddie Steve Williams’ arms and broke down after his final putt fell.

It was the first major he had won after the death of his father and the normally reserved Woods let his emotions come through.
