PGA Championship, Hits & Misses from Day 2

by Jeff Skinner

Hits

How about Kenny Perry making the cut in his home state of Kentucky? Scores of 72 and 69 have him at -1. He said he needed about 100 tickets for all the family and friends. Now they get to see him on the weekend.

Another player representing the Champions Tour well was Colin Montgomerie who is having a resurgent season on the Champions Tour and off the course as well. He went 70, 71 and made the cut on the number. Go Monty.  PGA Championship - Round Two

Rory McIlroy has it going on all cylinders and when he finds his stride at majors the foot never comes off the gas pedal. He’s hit 20 of 28 fairways and used 27 putts each day. His driver should be registered as a lethal weapon as he is really killing it out there at Valhalla. He went out early, finished early and the rest of the field struggled to keep pace.

Jason Day shot the low round of the day with a great 65. He jumped up the leaderboard to sit one back of Rory tied for second with Jim Furyk. Day has a great record in the majors but still looking for his first win.

Rickie Fowler is another young player that has had a great major season: T5 at The Masters and T2 at the U.S. and British Opens. His 66 has him in a tie for fourth with Ryan Palmer just two back of Rory.

Phil Mickelson was up to his old tricks again, teasing us. A bogey at the fourth had him heading in the wrong direction but birdies at 7,9,10 and 14 had him moving up. A bogey at 15 derailed him briefly but a superb approach in 18 gave him a great chance at an eagle. We know Phil loves the dramatic so he drained his eagle putt to move to -6 and a tie for sixth.

Jim Furyk is the ultimate grinder. There’s no flash, no drama and mostly no smiles. All he does is play solid golf. The 41 year old likes hanging out with the kids on top of the leaderboard. He goes 66-68 is at -8 and tied for second. You have to love that swing.

Misses

Lee Westwood was making an early charge and truly threatening Rory. And then came his cold spell: A double and a pair of bogeys from 13-16 sunk his chances. Still he is at -5 and tied for eighth and still in it.

I don’t know what to say about Tiger Woods. After he tells us he’s 100% he plays like a hacker but insists he’s fine. But after today’s debacle of missed shots, both left and right he now says he needs to get healthy and stronger. He shouldn’t have played last week and he shouldn’t have played this week. He needs to put his ego on the shelf and sit out until he actually is really healthy. Tom Watson should call him now and say forget it. No way he should be on that Ryder Cup Team. bubba club throw

Martin Kaymer missed the cut and it may be more than the U.S. Open hangover. He admitted to nursing a shoulder injury the past weeks. Let’s hope he gets well in a hurry.

Bubba Watson spends half the day whining about the rain and the other half crying about his shots.  Then he Tweets an apology to his fans.  Grow up Bubba, your act is getting real old.

Keegan Bradley who wants to earn a Ryder Cup pick misses the cut. That’s not the way to impress your captain. Webb Simpson missed it also and his chances are very slim right now.

Tom Watson played valiantly but Valhalla was to big even for his Popeye forearms. But he has bigger things to worry about. His Ryder Cup Team is in shambles. Dustin Johnson who was a lock is out (who knows the real reason). Jason Dufner sits at 8th on the points list but has neck issues and says he will not play any golf until he is healthy. Matt Kuchar, 5th in the points race withdrew with back issues. Tiger is done and should not even be in the conversation as a pick. Jordan Spieth, 6th in the points race missed the cut here and has one top ten in his last nine starts. Maybe Steve Stricker will need to be a playing assistant captain. The USA is running out of healthy players.
