Webb Simpson’s Ryder Cup Stunk

The 2014 Ryder Cup fallout continues and I suspect it won’t stop until the U.S. finally wins one. Recently one of America’s own spoke out on what a terrible experience his Ryder Cup was.

Webb Simpson told The Golf Channel that his time spent in Scotland wasn’t too much fun. No kidding Webb…it was a drag for anyone hoping the Americans would be competitive.

“The golf side was a terrible experience because I only played in two matches,” Simpson said. “I showed up in Scotland really ready to play and excited to play, and when you sit through three matches in a row, it’s tough.

“So the golf part for me stunk, I’m not going to lie. I mean, if I said the golf was great, you could call me a liar, and we didn’t win. If I sit three matches and we win, I’ll have a different answer.”

“Any golfer wants to play, and I wanted to play,” he said. “So my anticipation of what the Ryder Cup would be on a golf side, and what it was, was much different. And that’s why I said yesterday it stunk. … I think all of our team would agree that to an extent, the golf part did stink. We lost. We lost the Ryder Cup, and nobody likes that.”  Webb Simpson 14 ryder

Wait a minute Webb…let’s back up here for a minute. Maybe the fact that you were playing horribly and got waxed 5 & 4 in the opening match had something to do with the loss. Maybe the fact that you gagged on the opening tee shot when you popped up your three wood set the tone for your lousy play. Maybe the truth is you didn’t deserve a spot on the team.

Webb didn’t earn a spot on the Ryder Cup Team. He was playing poorly all year, so poorly in fact that Captain Tom Watson had decided to select Bill Haas instead of Simpson along with Keegan Bradley and Hunter Mahan. Watson had texted to some that Haas was on the team and not Simpson.

But a late night text to Watson from Simpson pleading to be on the team persuaded Tom the Terrible to change his mind and take Simpson instead. Even before the first ball was struck Watson had gone against his own plan. It was all over then…but that’s another rant.

Now Webb says the golf part stunk and truer words were never spoken but Webb was a big reason it stunk.  Watson realized he had picked a real stinker in Simpson who had shown little good form and sat him. It may have been one of the few good decisions Watson made all week.

Instead of going with his original plan, if he actually had one Watson’s pick of Simpson came back to bite him.

But Simpson did speak the truth, the golf part did stink.  And from what we all heard the Team Room wasn’t much fun either.
