Round the World Round Up

The weather in the Northeast took a decidedly chilly turn today and any golfers on the courses here may have been breaking out the “winter golf” gear. But there still was plenty of golf played around the world this weekend and some exciting finishes at that.

There was double barrel action on the European Tour this week as tournaments took place on two continents. At the limited field Volvo World Match Play Championship Mikko IIonen out dueled Henrik Stenson for a 3 & 1 victory. It is IIonen’s second Euro Tour win in 2014 and his fifth overall.  baek

Meanwhile on the other side of the world at the Hong Kong Open Scott Hend was able to survive a playoff for his first career Euro Tour win. The Australian beat Angel Que of the Philippines with a par on the first playoff hole.

The LPGA is making their autumn swing through Asia and there was a three player playoff at the LPGA KEB HanaBank Championship. Kyu Jung Baek won her first LPGA title in her home country of Korea. She held off fellow Korean In Gee Chun and low American Brittany Lincicome. Baek, only nineteen but a veteran of the Korean LPGA birdied the par five eighteenth for the win in sudden death.

Shriners Hospitals For Children Open - Final RoundBen Martin was another first time winner this week as he held off a charge from Kevin Streelman for his first PGA Tour win at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Martin finished birdie, eagle, par and birdie at the last for a two shot margin of victory.

And finally on the Champions Tour Jay Haas proves that he still has what it takes to win. He became the 18th Champions Tour player to win at 60 years of age or older. His win at the Greater Hickory Kia Classic was his 17th on the senior circuit and proves he is aging like a fine wine.
