Jordan Spieth’s Thanksgiving Travels Pays Off

spieth aussie openMany Americans travel for Thanksgiving. The Wednesday before Turkey Day is the busiest travel day of the year in the States.

Jordan Spieth was one of those who traveled a bit for Thanksgiving. But Spieth didn’t head home to his family in Texas, no Spieth decided to head to the other side of the world to spend a few weeks playing golf and cashing checks.

Spieth has plenty to be thankful for this week after he shot a course record 63 and blew away the field at The Australian Open.

Tied for the lead going into the final round at five under par Spieth put his game into hyper-drive and lit up the Australian Golf Club, recently redesigned by Jack Nicklaus.

His record 63 was five shots clear of the next best round of the day and gave him a five stroke margin of victory.

The 2013 John Deere winner has found some top notch form during his travels.

After a T35 finish at the HSBC Champions he finished second at The Dunlop Phoenix after he lost in a playoff.

Spieth’s final round in Australia was a work of art: four birdies on the front, four birdies on the back and not a bogey to be seen.

He is the first American to win the Australian Open since 1993 when Brad Faxon won in the year that Spieth was born.

Last year’s winner, Rory McIlroy still stinging from a third round 76 finished tied for fifteenth and the Aussie favorite, Adam Scott was fifth.  spieth aussie trophy

Spieth recognized how impressive his round was.

“It’s the best round I have ever played, especially considering the conditions,” Spieth said. “It was just kind of one of those rounds when you’re in the zone and you’re not sure what you’re at. It’s nice that it came on a Sunday.”

He also appreciated the lofty company of past Australian Open winners, “I didn’t realize Gary Player won it seven times and Jack (Nicklaus) won it six, plus the more recent names of Adam and Rory. Hall-of-famers, that’s what I think of when I see this trophy and you don’t see that often on a trophy. It’s really cool that my name will go on here and I’ll get to keep this trophy … maybe not this one, but a replica!”

Happy Thanksgiving.
