Greg Chalmers Tops Adam Scott in Playoff

I was one of those demented fanatics that tuned into the Golf Channel on Saturday evening and into early Sunday morning, to get a look at Adam Scott and the Australian PGA Championship.

Like many I was hoping to see Scotty defend his title and maybe live vicariously through those fans that were getting tanned by the warm Australian sun. After all I’ve been frozen out of playing golf up here in the Northeast and any sun splashed golf, even on TV would be a welcome site.

Well Adam Scott may have been disappointed but anyone that tuned in shouldn’t be.   scott & chalmers

Greg Chalmers completed a comeback of epic proportions when he outdueled Scott in a playoff that lasted a lengthy seven holes.

But that seven hole playoff may have been the easy part of the day for Chalmers. He actually started the day seven shots off the lead and needed to card the low round of the tournament to have a chance at winning.

Chalmers sunk a clutch birdie putt on the final hole to get to eleven under but had to wait hours while Scott and Wade Ormsby tried to pass him. Neither could and the three went to the eighteenth hole for a sudden death playoff. And they went again and again and again until Scott and Chalmers stood on the tee for the seventh time in the playoff.

Ormsby was knocked out after their third trip when Chalmers and Scott birdied and it was mano y mano for the two Aussies.

It couldn’t have been any different off the tee for Chalmers and Scott. Scott would boom his drives straight down the middle well past Chalmers. Chalmers seemed to have a thing for the bunkers. He was playing from the sand for all but one hole of the playoff.

Neither could stick it very close with their approaches but Chalmers did work some magic while he got up and down from the rough on two occasions to stay tied with the forever two putting Scott.

chalmersScott would put his approaches closer than Chalmers but Chalmers always got his first putt or his chip well within tap in range. Scott burned the edge on a few tries and the two would head back to the tee.

When Scott finally broke his string of two putts with a three put Chalmers had completed an impressive comeback.

“It was an epic day, I honestly didn’t think I’d be sitting here at this point today with the quality of the guys leading the tournament and doing well,” said Chalmers.

“I just wasn’t sure Scotty was ever going to hit a loose shot,” he said.

“I was trying to drive it in the fairway; I kept driving it in every bunker.”

“I thought if I’m going to lose this, I want to lose to a birdie.”

“It’s a shame sometimes that that doesn’t work out that way, that someone makes birdie and makes something spectacular but I’m very pleased to be the champion again.”
