In his day Colin Montgomerie wasn’t treated too well by American golf fans. They seemed to sense his thin skin and rabbit ears and gave Monty the hardest of times every chance they could.
Monty came off as uptight and never found a way to build any relationship with American fans.
But this is a new Monty we have seen since he joined the Champions Tour and has spent so much time on the Golf Channel. He’s a kinder, gentler Monty and he’s really been very entertaining.
Heck, this is a guy who enjoys America so much he drives from tournament to tournament with his wife by his side to see the States up close and personal. Can you imagine that happening a few years ago?
But true to his Roots, Monty is a big proponent of European golfers, in particular Rory McIlroy.
He says that Rory has taken the game to new levels, even higher than Tiger Woods. While Rory is the golfer right now I think we need a few more seasons before we forget about Tiger’s accomplishments.
But Monty does make some interesting points. Rory is halfway to his Rory-Slam or McSlam or whatever. He has the Open Championship and PGA trophies. A win at Augusta would not only give him the Career Slam but he’d be a U.S. Open win from four straight majors.
That Monty, he can be interesting when he wants.
