10 Things I Think

1.  I am not a fan of playoffs in golf. To me it is anti-climatic. Watching two guys replay eighteen isn’t exciting it’s boring. You would think it would be thrilling since it is match play at that point but it never is. There is too much time to fill and I am sure those television producers feel the same.

2.  Losing two of golf’s greats in a week is tough. Billy Casper and Charlie Sifford both made their mark in golf. Casper was the fourth member of the “Big Three” and Sifford was the Jackie Robinson of the game. Their grace and dignity are still inspirational.

3.  It seems the Yips have made their way into golf culture the same way the selfie has in popular culture. They are both so annoying but everyone is doing them.

4.  Joining The King, The Golden Bear, The Black Knight and the Shark with another classic nickname in our game is Bernd Wiesberger. His splendid moniker: Burnt Cheeseburger. Nice one.

5.  This is a nice streak of beautiful courses that the PGA Tour is on. Torrey Pines last week followed by Pebble Beach and then to Riviera next. Those are three gorgeous courses for both the player and us viewers.

6.  Is it me or is The Big Break always better when there are some women in the competition. Am I a sexist when I ask that? Definitely.

7.  There is so much speculation and discussion on the state of Tiger Woods’ game. Jaime Diaz of Golf World goes as far as anyone when he says that Woods’ play “was simply too graphic not to trust our eyes. The emperor has no clothes.”

8.  Ian Baker Finch can relate to Woods like few players in the game. After his ’91 Open Championship his game slipped and then in ’95 it fell off a cliff. Just like Tiger, he would kill it on the range and throw up on the course. He claims he knows what is bothering Tiger: It’s fear… “And it’s not the yips. It’s not a spasm. … It’s a fear.” Finch should know, he lived it.

9.  Tiger’s troubles dominates the news. Phil Mickelson missed two straight cuts on courses he loves. The times they are a changing. Heck they are already changed. Those two may win again but they will only dominate in the headlines not in victories. It’s time for the new wave led by Rory McIlroy and supported by a large field of solid, younger golfers.

10.  My brother and I were cheering like hell for J.B. Holmes this past weekend. Even though he lost the playoff he still was an inspiration to our family. My teenage niece was scheduled on Monday to have the same operation that J.B. had in 2011. We thought that it might give us some good karma. The good news is that the surgery went well and she is recuperating as expected. She will be happy to “get her life back.” She’s an amazing kid. Go get em Emilie.
