10 Things I Think

1.  Some will ridicule Brandt Snedeker for breaking down and fighting back the tears after his win at Pebble Beach. Not me, I think it is great. Emotion is so much a part of our lives and our game it’s fine with me. Sneds has become the tour’s new Steve Stricker who cried each time he spoke into a microphone.

2.  Dustin Johnson is rounding into form after his six month sabbatical. After a missed cut last week he finished tied for fourth at Pebble and with his new son around to keep him grounded he can only get better. I wonder if he has the PGA Championship at Whistling Straights circled on his calendar.  snedeker pebble trophy

3.  People will take Jim Furyk to task for once again fading on Sunday. The last nine times he had a share of the lead going into the last round he has faltered. But this is the first time he has competed since October. Give me a break. And Furyk is hands down one of the most honest and accommodating pros out there. He never says no to the media. Much like Jack Nicklaus he knows they have a job to do and is always straightforward, sometimes painfully so.

4.  Jason day is throwing up on Thursday, battling a flu all weekend and backs up his win at Torrey Pines with a T4 finish. Nice. He has been everyone’s pre-major favorite for some time, this may be his year.

5.  Pebble Beach looked more beautiful than ever. The once in a century warm, sunny weather provided a perfect stage for the pros and celebrities to strut their stuff. But please, I rather watch the waves breaking and the beachcombers than listen to Nantz, Faldo and Kostis break down Ray Romano’s swing.

6.  One of the highlights for me was the video of that crazy dog sprinting wildly around the beach. It is a few minutes of pure joy. I challenge you to watch this and not smile. It can’t be done.

7.  I couldn’t watch all of this weekend’s coverage but I was fortunate enough to catch the moments that were “Tiger-Free.” Not listening to the talking heads go on and on about Tiger’s troubles was pure bliss. Where is he anyway? Skiing, chipping, partying?  dog pebble

8.  Snedeker has a most unusual putting stroke. It contradicts everything the teachers profess to know about putting. The common thought is that you need a smooth, lengthy stroke that finishes well past the ball to be a good putter. Sneds pops that ball out of there like he is banging the bottom of a ketchup bottle. No flow, just pop. It works and it goes to show you just how individual putting is.

9.  Adam Scott has entered into a phase of his life, no not a new swing coach or his new caddie. Scott and his wife became parents to their new daughter, Bo Vera Scott on Sunday. Congrats Adam.

10.  Snedeker wasn’t the only golfer tearing up on Sunday. Lee Janzen broke down as won on the Champions Tour for the first time. The two time U.S. Open champion and Champions Tour rookie hadn’t won in over 16 years and 413 starts. I think it was Lee Trevino who said the Champions Tour is the “greatest mulligan in life.” I bet Janzen feels exactly the same way.
