PGA of America Showing Davis Some Love

Tim Rosafote reported on the Golf Channel last night that Davis Love III will be named as the 2016 Ryder Cup captain.

Rosaforte’s report was based on his insider connections to the members of the Ryder Cup Task Force.

The PGA of America would not confirm the Love appointment saying “It is premature to discuss the U.S. Ryder Cup captaincy and we are not prepared to comment at this time.”  dliii

Love’s appointment comes as a bit of a surprise as many players including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson had expressed support for Fred Couples who has had a great run as Presidents Cup Captain and had said he would accept the captaincy of the Ryder Cup.

The last victorious U.S. Captain, Paul Azinger was also touted as another savior but rumor is that he was luke warm to returning for another stint.

As for Love, he was a very popular captain during his 2012 campaign. He appeared to have done everything right as the American team took a 10-6 lead into the Sunday single matches. Then the clock struck midnight for his Cinderella team and they collapsed before his eyes. A disheartening 14 ½ to 13 loss shocked the Americans and they have yet to recover.

As much as Couples was touted by some players his non-selection may say more about the PGA of America than Love’s appointment. For years there have been Ryder Cup Captains and Presidents Cup Captains and no cross over between the two. It was an unwritten rule, there were PGA of America guys and PGA Tour guys. Couples has said himself that he “wasn’t a PGA of America guy.” That’s obvious now.

With Love the PGA of America has a known quantity that is respected and liked by all the players as well as the PGA brass.
