Euro’s Tap Darren Clarke as Captain

We spent yesterday talking Ryder Cup and the “non-announcement” of Davis Love III being named the American Captain. The PGA wouldn’t officially comment and Love diplomatically wouldn’t confirm Tim Rosaforte’s report. If Rosaforte reports it then we know it’s accurate.

But on the other side of the pond there was no such uncertainty: Darren Clarke was officially named the 2016 European Team Ryder Cup Captain. Clarke beat out Miguel Angel Jimenez and will lead the Euro’s as they defend at Hazeltine.

Clarke is well liked and both he and Love are favorites of their respective tours.

For my money Clarke was at the center of the best Ryder Cup moment ever. The 2006 Ryder Cup may be remembered for the big ass whippin the Euros laid on the Americans, 18 ½ to 9 ½, but for me it was Darren Clarke playing and playing well just six weeks after he lost his wife. He was buoyed by his teammates, the fans and even his opponents all week and it was a magical week for him and anyone who watched it.
