Monday Morning Shootout at The Honda Classic

This is the kind of finish the folks at The Honda Classic had hoped for. No, not a Monday morning closeout, but the exciting shootout that is about to take place.

It’s like the shootout at the OK Corral, where the gunslingers were poised to take each other down.

This is a packed leaderboard and thanks to what may be the worst shot of Ian Poulter’s career, the Honda Classic has boiled down to a Monday Morning Shootout.

There’s plenty of golf left and these guys will come out firing when play begins this morning.

Paul Casey, T1 at -7. Casey was the hottest golfer when play was called going six under through his last 12 holes. The 65th ranked player in the world is desperately trying to find his form and get back to where he had been: a top ten player in the world. It looks like he’s there.  paul casey

Ian Poulter, T1 at -7. Poults had a three shot lead until he shanked a shank for the ages. He compounded it with a following a bogey but may have regained his composure with a birdie on his last hole. As we have seen at Ryder Cups Poulter loves the pressure. Well, he has it now.

Patrick Reed, 3rd at -6. The self proclaimed “top 5 player in the world” has done nothing except play like one since he shocked the golf world with his brashness. He doesn’t care if he’s playing Tiger, Phil Jack or Arnie…this kid is as confident a player as there is in the game.

Daniel Berger, T4 at -4. Every shootout needs some young punk who thinks he can take down the big guns and Berger is just that. He’s 21 and a PGA Rookie but has 2 top tens in his last three starts and may be ready to introduce himself to the world.

Jeff Overton, T4 at -4. “Boom Baby” is back. Overton hasn’t done much other than a few top tens since that famous Ryder Cup moment in 2010. Has it been that long? His last two starts resulted in missed cuts so if there is a dark horse, a very dark horse in this “corral” it’s Overton.

Phil Mickelson, T4 at -4. Phil the Thrill would love to finally get off the skid he has been on since the ’13 Open Championship. He thinner, more fit and says his arthritis is under control. Now if he could just control his driver. A win here would be just the momentum he needs heading into his favorite tournament, The Masters.

Brendan Steele, T4 at -4. Steele may be finding his game. He was tied for second at The Humana and finished T14 on a brutal Riviera course. He’s got one PGA Tour win back in 2011 but is in the mix here.
