This Week: Trump, Trump and More Trump

This is a big week on the PGA Tour. It’s the first World Golf Championship, the season debut of many elite players in the U.S. and a showcase for a man who has become one of the biggest names in golf: Donald Trump.

In addition to being one of the biggest names in the game he’s also one of the most controversial. Is he a presidential candidate or isn’t he? Who will he fire next? Will he screw up Turnberry? All valid, as well as very scary questions.

Like him or hate him, there’s no gray area here, we can’t deny that he has become a huge player in the game. This week the PGA Tour has two events, the WGC Cadillac Championship and the Puerto Rico Open, both are hosted on Trump owned courses.  trump fam tiger

His next step in pursuit of being the best — a possible presidential run in 2016.

Before heading to the Cadillac Championship, Trump spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland. A player in Republican politics for three decades, he has considered runs for the White House before but has never officially been a candidate.

“I’m very serious. I’m not doing this for fun or doing this for the brand. I’m looking at the country right now and we’re in serious trouble,” says Trump, who would become a celebrity apprentice of sorts should he decide to run.

“We’re being laughed at, scoffed at. We’re in a different place than we were before and we need to fix this. China is the world’s economic engine right now. They’re taking our jobs, they’re growing and they are the financial clout in the world today. We’re $18 trillion in debt. I love this country and I want to do everything I can to make this country great again.”

Trump as president might be a bit more than most of us could stand but I really think he does this for all the attention. He loves the attention.

Whether it’s the “You’re fired” tagline, Twitter battles with Rosie O’Donnell or promoting his latest “greatest course in the world” (he calls all of his the greatest something) it’s the attention that he thrives on.

He’ll be getting a bit more attention when his latest course opens up in April, Trump Golf Links Ferry Point. Ferry Point is a collaboration with Jack Nicklaus and New York City.

It’s called a municipal course but with NYC residents forking over $169 on the weekends and non-residents paying $215 can we really claim this is a “public course.” Maybe a very expensive public course would be a better term.
