Chip Shots from the Arnold Palmer Invitational

Morgan Hoffmann leads at Arnie’s Place and rightly so. He’s making birdies by the bunch, hitting greens and leading the field in putting. That will get you to -13 and a three stroke lead.

Hoffmann fought off the distraction of his grandmother’s death right before the tournament and seems to have used it as motivation realizing there are more important things in life than birdies and bogeys.

Karen Crouse profiles the New Jersey native who grew up hoping to spend more time on the ice playing hockey than on the grass making birdies.

Hoffman may be benefitting from a bit of karma this week as he and his host shares a love of flying. Palmer flew his own plane for over 50 years and Hoffmann pilots his own plane to each tournament.

Hoffman will have his work cut out for him as he is being chased by the defending champion, Matt Every, the Terminator aka Henrik Stenson and world number one Rory McIlroy who has just found his game on American soil.

While Hoffman continues to putt well many have struggled on the greens as these greens are significantly slower than what the pros see all week. They will be resurfaced immediately after the tournament. But in deference to The King, I have not read or heard of one complaint from the players. That’s what being The King will get you.

On this morning’s Golf Central Brandel Chamblee said it best in speaking about Arnold Palmer and how he conducted his life as, “There’s more to a champion than shooting a low score.” Well played, well played.
