10 Things I Think

1.  Matt Every played some clutch golf on Sunday at The Arnold Palmer Invitational. A 66 and the most clutch of clutch putts on eighteen. That’s how you close out a round.  every fist

2.  The only thing missing from Arnie’s stop was the rare double eagle. Then we get two in one tournament: Daniel Berger on Saturday and Zack Johnson on Sunday, amazing.

3.  I love Lydia Ko and all she brings to the LPGA. She’s talented, humble and gets it. But she is soooo slow. She needs to pick it up: way too much chatting with her caddie and the Aim Point on the greens now has her near the point of being unbearable.

4.  Speaking of slow play, Henrik Stenson and Morgan Hoffman were put on the clock early in the round and then again on fifteen and Stenson was fuming about it. He said it affected him down the stretch and said “I kind of rushed my putting on 16 and three-putted that one. That’s really what cost me the tournament.” Ouch.

5.  We are used to seeing winners gush and babble on as they are interviewed right after their win but that’s not Matt Every’s style. He was obviously emotional but seems like a man of few, but sincere words when in front of the microphone.

6.  That being said he did open up and get a roar from the media when he was asked what he was thinking of standing over that putt on 18. “I walked up to the green and this guy in the crowd kept like coughing like straight putt, straight putt like that (laughter). I was like this guy is a really dick if he’s lying to me (laughter) because it’s a pretty important moment.  I looked over it pretty hard and I didn’t see anything. So I was like it was a great putt to have under pressure, too, because I literally had to get it going, wasn’t going to come up short. I put it on a decent line and hung in there I thought it might — the last three feet I was begging for it to hang and I was like, Gosh, these are the ones that always lip out. Be so cool to see this one dive in and it did. Really a cool moment.”

7.  Morgan Hoffman showed a few cracks on Sunday but this week has to be one of those “learning experiences” for him.

8.  Many were hoping that Rory McIlroy would round into form and make a move at Bay Hill. His game was spotty at best but that’s how he rolls. Even when he wins, and wins by a mile he’s prone to spells of wildness. But when he is on…boy, is he on.  rory api

9.  Arnie was as proud as a man could be when he was asked about his grandson, Sam Saunders. All credit to Saunders, he is trying to carve out his own piece of professional golf and with as many doors that were opened for him it is still tough growing up with a legend as your pop.

10.  Stacy Lewis gave it hell at the JTBC Founders Cup but Hyo Joo Kim birdied five of her last eight holes to earn her second career LPGA win. Kim’s win keeps the South Korean domination of the LPGA going. South Koreans have won five of the six ’15 tournaments with Lydia Ko the only player to break up their streak.

OT.  The Golf Channel’s LPGA team is an underappreciated group. Terry Gannon is serviceable, and Tom Abbott gets plenty of mileage from his British wit and accent. Kaye Cockerill and Jerry Foltz shine with their on course reporting but the queen of the show is Judy Rankin. She’s insightful, talented and so very classy.

Double OT.  The Bay Hill course provided plenty of excitement, even before the pair of double eagles, and Every’s 19 under par proves that there is nothing wrong with going low.

Triple OT.  It’s great to see how the golf world appreciates Arnold Palmer while he hosts the tour at his Bay Hill Club. He’s The King and always will be.
