Phil the Thrill Finds His Game

Phil Mickelson has said he likes to play going into a major and he proved his point today as he made a move at The Shell Houston Open.

Phil who will be trying for his fourth Masters title found the golf game that he has been searching for all season. With two missed cuts and his best finish only a T17 in 2015 Phil has been struggling to find his winning form.  phil sho

Coming into Houston he was hitting 56% of the greens and had a pathetic -.087 rating in strokes gained putting. Talk about a turnaround: in round two he hit 78% of his greens and gained a hefty 1.995 strokes on the field with his putter.

He was striping it with his “strong three-wood” but as Phil will do a few drivers got away from him. On seventeen he was left of left and carded his second bogey of the day to go seven birdies.

His five under 67 has him one back of leader Andrew Putnam who scorched his back nine (front) with six birds over his last seven holes for a 65.

Phil the Thrill was feeling his oats today as he consistently hit one less club than his younger playing partners. If Patrick Reed and Hunter Mahan hit a five iron, Phil would pull a six. I think he was trying to psych them out.

It worked: the 44 year old beat both his playing partners. In fact, the old dude hit a 180 yard nine iron, so much for his arthritis.
