Ten Things I Think…Masters Style

1.  When Bubba Watson won his first Masters he was dubbed an American Folk hero. Jordan Spieth is just a plain old hero.

2.  Wire to wire win, setting Masters records all over the place, green jacket and all the perks that it brings…not bad for a kid that would be graduating from college next month if he hadn’t turned pro. I think Spieth made the right career choice.  spieth bubba

3.  Props to Justin Rose for reclaiming his championship form which had deserted him.

4.  Cheers to Mark O’Meara who wins the “Masters Senior Champion Award.” Marko finished T22 and had two 68’s. Not bad for a 58 year old.

5.  In his first Masters Erik Compton made the cut and while he may not be pleased with his T51 finish he has to be pleased that he made the weekend and had a full week at Augusta. Those hills couldn’t have been easy for him.

6.  Dustin Johnson and majors just don’t seem to get along. While making plenty of birdies and setting a record for three eagles in a round he can’t stay away from those bogeys and doubles.

7.  Tiger Woods played better than most expected. He showed that all the work on his short game had paid off but he seemed to be allergic to fairways. On Sunday he hit just two and hit 54% for the tournament. But his glutes were firing all week.

8.  Spieth and Rose were the epitome of class all day at Augusta as they acknowledged each other good shots. Both are fine gentlemen and true sportsmen.

9. Rory McIlroy came to Augusta putting pressure on himself as he lusted over his career grand slam. Maybe it was too much pressure as he had to fight to make the cut on Friday but bounced back with 68-66 on the weekend for a respectable fourth place finish.  spieth rose

10.  Spieth is being celebrated as much for his good play as he is for his maturity, humility and character. Gene Wojciechowski of ESPN had a great line on the new Masters Champion: “He’s twenty one and going on Nicklaus.” Nice one.

11.  Colin Montgomerie spent some time on the set of Live from The Masters and he also had a good one. Talking about what the field had to do to try and overtake Spieth he said they needed to just be there in case Spieth faltered. “Faldo won five majors by just being there.” Ouch, I guess he was giving credit for winning at least one of his majors.

12.  Phil Mickelson found his major game and recorded his tenth second place finish in a major.  Hopefully he’ll feed of this for the U.S. Open in two months and finally break throgh for his career Grand Slam.

13.  The week got started with the Drive, Chip & Putt Final and that is quickly becoming a much loved part of Masters Week.

14.  Friday we said goodbye to Ben Crenshaw as a competitor at The Masters and it was a touching, emotional ending, so fitting for a man that loves and appreciates all things golf and Augusta National.

15.  Sunday night wearing the green jacket Jordan Spieth was humble and grateful during his remarks when receiving the green jacket. Would we expect anything else? What a champion he will be.
