Jordan or Bubba?

The PGA Tour swings into New Orleans for the Zurich Classic this week and while the rest of the tour battles the humidity and the alligators Jordan Spieth will be enjoying a hard earned rest.

He’s still the golfer with the most buzz flying around him right now and he’s reached the finals of Golf.com’s “Best American Golfer Bracket.”  spieth closeup green

Spieth and his Masters winning buddy Bubba Watson are the final matchup and they are asking fans to vote for who is America’s Best Golfer.

Spieth is riding his Masters’ wave right now and his All-American profile has made him America’s golfing sweetheart.

But as far as a career goes, Watson who has played much longer than Spieth holds an advantage. Watson has seven PGA Tour career wins, two majors and $27 mil in the bank.

Spieth has three career PGA Tour wins, one major and $13 mil.

Spieth has edged ahead to number two in the Official World Golf Ranking to Watson’s fourth.

The upside for Spieth, only twenty, is just beginning. Watson at thirty-six is in his prime.  Bubba Green JAcket

Spieth has to get the nod for best American at this moment, anyone who has the last major in his pocket automatically grabs that honor.

But here’s my take on the poll: there may be some, although it should be modest, debate about who is the Best American Golfer but there is no debate as to what golfer is best for American golf.

Spieth’s youth, exuberance, Jack Armstrong personality and his ability to attract non-golf fans gives him an infinite upside.

Bubba, while still learning to control his frequent petulance has drawn many fans to golf. But Spieth can do so much more for American golf.

Hopefully he and Rory McIlroy will be going at it for years to come.

And somehow I don’t see Spieth ever changing into an entitled, selfish person.

Hands down, he just not the Best American Golfer he’s the golfer that’s Best for American Golf.

  1. Does anyone today really know who Jack Armstrong was of remember what he stood for? Great turn of phrase the best for American golf, in full agreement. We won’t find Jordan trashing his caddie on the course and off, tooling around in the General Lee or lavishing half a million samolians on a wrist watch.

  2. Yea, you’re right…unless Jack takes a selfie or hangs with Kimmy K no one in this generation will get that. I guess I have dated” myself again. we are just 2 old dudes!!
