Ramblings from a Grumpy Old Golfer

So Rory McIlroy laps the field last week at the Wells Fargo jets off with his buddies to England and misses the cut at the BMW PGA. It’s no big deal like many would try to make it. Rory will miss some cuts, most golfers not named Tiger Woods (in his prime) miss cuts.

The kid could use the weekend off, after all he hoisting the Irish Open at Royal County Down. “I’d love to have played the weekend but it’s a weekend off I probably need,” he said. No pushing the panic button here.

Now Jordan Spieth almost missed the cut on Friday on this side of the pond with a short lived meltdown on his back nine (front) on Friday. A bogey on four and a triple bogey seven on five put Spieth perilously close to hanging out with his college buddies.   spieth colonial 2

But this is what is special about this kid. He gathers himself and shoots 67-65 to tie for second and miss a playoff by a shot. Oh, but for that seven!

For now that Rory/Jordan rivalry is just a seed in need of watering. Jordan is a worthy contender as his no.2 ranking indicates but right now it’s Rory versus the rest of the world. Even with a missed cut.

Props to Byeong-Hun An who ran away with the European Tour’s flagship event the BMW PGA Championship. The 23 year old former U.S. Amateur Champion shot 65 and broke the previous tournament scoring record by two shots. “It’s like a fifth Major to me. It’s the biggest title I have won and gets me into a lot of events. This is life-changing.” He darn right it is.

Colin Montgomerie may have gone 0-71 in majors before he joined the Champions Tour but he has no problem winning senior majors. The 51 year old Scot’s Senior PGA Championship is third victory in six major attempts. In fact all three of Monty’s senior wins are majors: two PGA’s and a U.S. Open. Life begins at 50 for some people.

Speaking of life after fifty…What is the story with Miguel Angel Jimenez? It seems Monty’s fifty-something pal just keeps on getting better with age. Mr. Cool carded his third ace of 2015 and a record tenth on the Euro Tour and then finished tied for second at the BMW. And that’s playing against the kids. He is something special, on and off the course.

Happy Memorial Day and let’s remember it’s not just about cookouts and pool parties. Take a minute to honor the men and women who have died four this country.
