Ten Things I Think…U.S. Open Style

1.  All the golf world can relax and rejoice that we have Jordan Spieth for the next few decades. Will he win a bunch more majors? Maybe but even if he doesn’t he’s a joy to watch and listen to.  spieth trophy

2.  Is there is a golfer that is more fun to watch than Spieth? Yes, he’s great and skilled and all that but I love the chatter with his caddie, the emotional up and downs and the way he talks to himself and his ball.

3.  Dustin Johnson had a chance to exorcise those major championship demons on eighteen yesterday. He had the win on his putter, or at least a playoff. That missed putt will haunt him for a long time. But he played wonderful golf at Chambers Bay and while it stings now all things must pass.

4.  The good news for Phil Mickelson is that at least it wasn’t another damn second place finish. Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson never completed the grand slam. Maybe Phil is destined to join them.

5.  Cheers for Adam Scott’s final round 64, the low round of the Open and a T4 finish. T-minus six months until the anchored stroke is banned. Better get busy Adam.

6.  Louie Oosthuizen’s back nine 29 was a record score and an amazing display of determination. He was left for dead after he teamed with Woods and Fowler on day one with a 77. He shot 66-66-67 and did not win the Open. Amazing.  dj missed putt

7.  Fox’s coverage gets a big thumbs down. It was their first Open and it showed. They did deem to get the message to show more actual golf on Saturday and Sunday but their personalities seemed like rookies.

8.  The USGA may have taken Chambers Bay a bit too far to the edge. There’s a difference between “brown is the new green” and “brown means dead.” The course was dramatic enough and it didn’t need to be tricked up that much.

9.  There sure are some amazing views from the hills of Chambers Bay. But I don’t think I’d want to make that ten mile hike while shooting triple digits.

10.  What’s next for Tiger Woods? A new coach, a new swing (again), more reps, new glutes? Who knows but I’d start with a check up from the neck up. It’s all mental.

11.  For all the griping about the greens, and much was deserved Johnson didn’t make any excuses about the greens afterwards.

12.  It was a great week for golf but while originally I thought this late prime time coverage would be good I found myself struggling to not take a nap. And then writing afterwards had me exhausted. I’ll take a 7pm finish anytime.
